NMC Codes and Guidelines
The core function of the NMC is to establish standards of education, training, conduct and performance for nursing and midwifery and to ensure those standards are maintained, thereby safeguarding the health and wellbeing of the public.
Thier key tasksare to:
- maintain a Register of nurses and midwives eligible to practice in the UK (for exact numbers of nurses and midwives, refer to the statistical analysis documents on the facts and figures page)
- set standards and information for nursing and midwifery conduct, performance and ethics
- quality assure nursing and midwifery education
- consider allegations of misconduct, lack of competence or unfitness to practise due to ill health
- set standards and provide guidance for local supervising authorities for midwives
In addition to this the NMC are here to provide:
- a free and confidential advice service for nurses and midwives
- free publications to keep practitioners, students and the general public informed about the Council’s work
- a range of events including exhibitions, seminars and conferences
- NMC News, a quarterly news magazine, is mailed to all registrants in the UK and overseas
